For some things, we don’t want people to go that extra mile

Over 770 million people lack access to clean water. Women and children are often the hardest hit. In many parts of the world, it is the responsibility of women and girls to find and collect water. This often involves long walks every day, carrying heavy water containers in difficult terrain.

Fetching water takes so much time and effort that girls miss important school time and women find it difficult to work or be active in society. And this is just one of many challenges for communities lacking clean water access.

Many diseases are spread through dirty water as millions and millions of people are forced to rely on unsafe water sources such as contaminated wells, rivers or dams.

For example, diarrhea is the second most common cause of death in the world for children. Every day, around 800 children under the age of five die from diseases contracted due to dirty water, poor sanitation and poor hygiene.

Water for All is our way of accelerating the transformation towards cleaner water

Water for All is Epiroc’s main community engagement project, driven voluntarily on the local level by our employees. Since 1984 we have helped more than 2 million people all around the world get access to clean water and improved facilities for sanitation and hygiene.

A key aspect of all projects is involving the local community in planning, implementing and maintaining the new water source. They are the ones who know, for example, where a new well should be situated to benefit as many people as possible.

Our projects have historically varied between large and small initiatives. Between digging or drilling wells, protecting natural water springs, facilitating rain harvesting, or different kinds of water purification systems.
